Free Local Crochet & Knitting Groups

I love to crochet, and recently have picked up knitting.  I have decided to research local groups that crochet for charity, and/or just meet up for fun.   This is what I have found so far through extensive online searching and some word of mouth from others.

If you know of a group that is missing from here, please let me know.  I am willing to include any groups within 45 minutes of Waukesha.  This generally includes groups in Washington,Waukesha & Milwaukee county and perhaps others.   I know I am missing several that meet in Washington & Milwaukee counties.

In addition to what I’ve described, you may find something closer to you at the following links.  I’ve only described ones here that are close enough and safe enough areas that I want to check them out.

SUNDAYS
This group is not very large, maybe around 6 total members who do not all show up every week.  Usually at least one or more of us are there most weeks.  I have gone a couple times when no one else showed.  That was okay since I only live about a mile away, but if you live farther away you may want to exchange contact info with me or this other lady Trish to find out if others will be showing up.   Usually there are at least 4 or 5 of us that show up, not counting the kids or spouses that sometimes tag along with the ladies who crochet.  Bring your own yarn, needles or crochet hooks.  Members are friendly and willing to work with newbies to help you with problems.

  1. My husband and I are moving to Pewaukee soon and I am so happy to have found this list you made of crochet and knitting groups. I am an avid crocheter and usually donate my items to charity. Maybe I’ll bump into you at one of the meetings.

I go most often to the Sussex Community Center one on Thursdays, and the Pauline Haas Public Library (Sussex area library) groups most often as they are closest to my house. Also go to the Sussex McDonald’s group on Sundays fairly often. McDonald’s one meets *nearly* every Sunday. If you find some of us, and don’t want to risk coming there if we aren’t meeting, you can get mine or Trish’s cell phone number to check if we are meeting. This is what I did, I got Trish’s number to see if she was meeting.

There is another Knitting crochet group that you didn’t mention. Our Savior’s Yarn Ministry meets the 2nd Saturday of the month, at Brumder Mansion, in the big parlor at 10:00 AM. We have a blast knitting and learning to crochet, making items for people who need a hug, or are experiencing a life change. We have extra needles and some yarn, and hope to get more yarn donated to us. It is free! Contact Julie at 310-766-2215.

Brumder Mansion is on the corner of 31st St. and W. Wisconsin Ave., right next to Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. People from all faiths are welcome. We learn so much from each other. Brumder Mansion Bed and Breakfast, 3046 W. Wisconsin Ave, Milwaukee, Wi 53206

I am a member of the New Berlin Public Library Crochet ( and knit) group. We officially meet from 6:30 to 7:30 pm on Mondays but some of us show up about 6:00 and stay till about 8:00. Our numbers vary, but usually around 8 – 12 people. It is an informal group where you can work on your own project. Occasionally our leader, Nancy, will teach a new stitch or technique. We meet in an upstairs lounge/fireside room and always welcome new members.

  5. Noel says:

Would anyone be willing to teach me? I can’t find a beginners class, park & rec use to have one,I literally have no clue where to begin, but would love to see if it’s something I end up loving! I’m located in waukesha but willing to drive a little bit.

    • trishay79 says:

Are you willing to drive to Sussex? I will be willing to teach you…I can drive to Waukesha or meet you somewhere in between like Pewaukee/brookfield area if need be…I share a car with hubby so need preferably 24 hour notice to meet up with you. Can meet you nearly any time if you’re willing to drive and meet at library in Sussex.
